PANAJI: Save Mhadei Group today said that it is duty of the government to notify Mhadei Tiger Reserve for not only providing environmental security, but to protect the perennial sources of thirst quenching forests.
“Not only to protect, the Mhadei lifeline of Goa, from the proposed Kalasa -Bhandura project of Karnataka, but also from the dozen of damming and diversion schemes, only, master key left is declaring the Mhadei region as the Tiger Reserve,” said Save Mhadei Activist Rajan Ghate.
He further urged the government, to put all the areas of human settlements, agriculture and horticulture inside the buffer zone and the pristine and areas that are untouched to be included in the core zone.
“Out of around 700 sq.km of the protected forests, Goa government can notify only 400 sq. km areas into the core and rest in the buffer zone,” he added.
Ghate said that Karnataka has planned to take All Party Delegation to the Prime Minister for getting speedy Goa in the Mhadei matter, by materializing the Mhadei Tiger Reserve proposal.
“We urge the government to conduct the judicial probe into the recent incidents of forest fire mandatory clearances for the Kalasa -Bhandura project. Goa should give top most priority for protecting the interests of that took place in various parts of Goa and then accordingly plan the strategy for long term conservation of the forests,” he added.
The Activist said that the majestic tigers have been breeding and thriving in the forests of the Mhadei region of Goa There urgent need to protect this animal that is on the apex of the food chain.
“The Goa Government had appointed senior counsel Mukul Rohatgi who was attorney general of India to challenge High Court order in Supreme Court. He charges 66 lakhs a Day to argue cases,” he added.
