Kolkata: In a deeply disturbing incident that has shocked West Bengal, a 24-year-old first-year law student from South Calcutta Law College has alleged that she was gang-raped inside the college premises. The medical report has corroborated her claims, revealing abrasion marks on her neck and breasts, along with bite marks, nail scratches, and signs of forceful penetration. Sources have stated that the possibility of sexual assault cannot be ruled out.
The incident reportedly took place on the evening of June 25. The survivor has alleged that Monojit Mishra, a 31-year-old former student of the college and currently the Organising Secretary of the Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP) in South Kolkata, confined her in the college after she refused his advances. According to her complaint, Mishra locked the college gate and expressed romantic interest in her, which she declined, stating she was already in a relationship. Following her refusal, he allegedly physically assaulted her, threatened to implicate her family in false cases, and raped her in the college’s security guard’s room. She further stated that the other two accused – Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20), both third-semester students – stood by and watched the assault. At one point, she pleaded for her inhaler due to breathing difficulties, but the assault reportedly continued even after she used it.
All three accused were arrested and produced before the Alipore Court, which remanded them to police custody till July 1. On Saturday, the police also arrested the college’s security guard, who is accused of leaving the guard room after being bullied by the perpetrators, allowing the assault to take place there. This marks the fourth arrest in the case. Police have seized the mobile phones of the accused and sent them for forensic analysis to determine whether any video footage of the incident exists or was shared.
The horrific nature of the crime has sparked widespread public outrage. Protests erupted outside the Kasba Police Station, with workers of the Congress and AIDSO demanding justice. The National Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognisance of the case and has directed the Kolkata Police to submit a detailed action taken report within three days.
The case has also triggered a political storm, with the Bharatiya Janata Party attacking the Trinamool Congress over the involvement of its student wing leader. However, TMCP president Trinankur Bhattacharya has denied any formal association with Monojit Mishra, stating that the students’ union at the college has been defunct for years and that Mishra never held an official post.
This latest incident has brought back grim memories of last year’s rape and murder of a medical intern at RG Kar Medical College, highlighting ongoing concerns about safety and security on college campuses. As investigations continue, the Kolkata Police are under immense pressure to ensure transparency and swift justice in this high-profile case.
