New Delhi: In a significant boost to India’s “drug-free Bharat” vision, a collaborative operation by the Indian Coast Guard and Gujarat Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has resulted in the seizure of 300 kg of narcotics worth a staggering Rs 1,800 crore. This monumental haul was recovered near the International Maritime Boundary Line off Gujarat’s coast, marking a crucial victory in the ongoing battle against drug trafficking.
The operation, conducted under the cover of darkness on the night of April 12-13, showcased the agility and coordination of Indian law enforcement agencies. As soon as smugglers spotted the Coast Guard ship approaching, they jettisoned their shipment and fled across the maritime boundary into Pakistani waters. Quick thinking by the Coast Guard allowed the recovery of the dumped narcotics, which were subsequently handed over to the ATS for further investigation.
This successful operation has been hailed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah as a testament to the effectiveness of the Modi government’s holistic approach to combating narcotics. It underscores India’s intensified campaign to dismantle drug rackets, which has seen enhanced efforts across the country.
Just days prior, another major seizure took place in Assam, where 30.4 kg of methamphetamine tablets valued at Rs 24.32 crore were confiscated. These seizures are part of a larger trend, with drugs worth Rs 16,914 crore being seized in 2024 alone—the highest figure recorded since India’s independence. Over the past decade, drug seizures have skyrocketed from 3.63 lakh kilograms between 2004 and 2014 to a remarkable 24 lakh kilograms from 2014 to 2024.
