New Delhi: In a dramatic turn of events during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, Pakistan’s Punjab Police has taken unprecedented action by dismissing over 100 officers for their failure to perform security duties. This move comes as the country hosts a major international cricket tournament for the first time in nearly three decades. The dismissals were made in Lahore, where the tournament is being held, and highlight significant security lapses that have raised concerns about accountability and preparedness.
The dismissed officers were tasked with securing routes between Gaddafi Stadium and hotels where teams are staying. However, many were either absent or outright refused to take up their responsibilities, according to a Punjab Police official. The Inspector General of Police (IGP) Usman Anwar has emphasized that there is no room for negligence in international events, underscoring the importance of strict security measures.
While there is no official reason given for the officers’ refusal, local media reports suggest that excessive duty hours and exhaustion may have played a role. This incident has occurred amidst Pakistan’s disappointing performance in the tournament, with the team being eliminated after consecutive losses to New Zealand and India.
Federal Information Minister Attaullah Tarar has downplayed concerns about potential security threats, stating that the tournament is being hosted smoothly with full security arrangements. Despite these assurances, the dismissal of over 100 security personnel raises questions about the management of security for future international events in Pakistan.
