Margao: in a coordinated crackdown spanning five police stations, South Goa Police arrested eight men in connection with the armed assault and firing on the Margao–Colva road near Mungul in the early hours of August 12.
The midnight attack, allegedly involving over 20 masked assailants armed with koytas, soda bottles, and a firearm, left two men injured and their Baleno car damaged. According to police, the accused intercepted the victims’ vehicle near Sagun Restaurant, assaulted them, and fired two shots, which struck the car but missed the intended target.
The joint investigation was led under the overall supervision of SP (South) Tikam Singh, SDPO Margao Sidhant Shirodkar, and PI Nathan Almeida of Fatorda Police Station. Task forces were formed from Margao Town, Colva, Cuncolim, Maina Curtorim, and Fatorda police stations, with each unit contributing inspectors, sub-inspectors, and constables to track and nab the suspects.
Within hours of the incident, the multi-station police effort resulted in the arrest of Rashul Shaikh (23), Wilson Carvalho (25), Shahrukh Shaikh (26), Mohammed Ali (24), Suraj Maaji (19), Gaurang Korgaonkar (24), Vasu Kumar (24), and Malik Shaikh (18). All were remanded to five days’ police custody by JMFC Margao.
Forensic teams from Verna examined the scene, recovering glass shards, a live round, and an empty cartridge case, along with blood samples from inside the victims’ car. Police say efforts are ongoing to locate the remaining accused and establish the full motive behind the brazen attack.
