COLVA: Following a special drive by the Colva Police to combat public drinking, thirteen people were taken into custody for alcohol consumption in public areas.
The police action is in response to complaints made by residents of the Benaulim constituency regarding the disturbance caused by visitors from other areas, such as Panaji, Margao, etc., who drink in public places, throw trash, break bottles, and fight with both locals who own businesses and tourists who visit the beach shacks.
Although the police acknowledged that drinking alcohol is a common part of Goan culture, they emphasized that it is illegal to drink in public places and that it disturbs the peace and quiet of the community. They made it clear that while people are allowed to consume alcohol in their homes, workplaces, bars, and other approved locations, doing so in public places is prohibited and is illegal.
The prohibition on drinking in public places is meant to protect locals’ safety and well-being as well as to act as a deterrent to disruptive behavior.
