New Delhi: A suspected terror plot targeting prominent religious sites and crowded areas in the national capital was foiled after the arrest of a suspected operative by the Special Cell of the Delhi Police.
The accused, identified as Shabbir Ahmed Lone, was detained during a counter terror operation and is believed to have links with the Pakistan based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba. During interrogation, investigators uncovered details of alleged reconnaissance activities carried out at several high profile locations in the city.
According to officials, the suspect reportedly conducted surveillance at major religious landmarks including the Kalkaji Temple, the Lotus Temple and the Chhatarpur Temple. Investigators believe that the accused recorded videos of these sites and shared them with handlers based in Pakistan.
Security agencies are also examining reconnaissance reportedly conducted around Connaught Place, one of the busiest commercial and tourist areas in the capital. The presence of surveillance footage from such locations has raised concerns that the suspected plot may have aimed at targeting crowded public spaces.
During questioning, officials also found indications of possible coordination involving Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence. Investigators are analysing the extent of communication between the accused and foreign handlers as part of the ongoing probe.
Sources involved in the investigation also pointed to attempts by terror operatives to create a new extremist outfit in Bangladesh, reportedly on the lines of the group The Resistance Front, which has previously been linked to militant activities in the region.
Following the arrest, authorities have stepped up security and surveillance across sensitive locations in New Delhi, particularly around religious institutions and busy public areas.
The investigation is continuing as security agencies work to trace possible accomplices and dismantle any wider network connected to the suspected terror plot.
