PANAJI: The Department of Tourism, Government of Goa, on Tuesday carried out enforcement action against an unauthorized structure operating under the name “Romeo Lane” at Vagator beach.
The action pertained to an encroachment identified within the Department’s jurisdiction. Upon inspection, officials confirmed that the structure violated applicable regulations, prompting demolition in strict accordance with the law.
It is noteworthy that the same structure had been subjected to demolition in 2024 for similar violations. Despite prior enforcement, the unauthorized portion was reconstructed without approval, necessitating fresh action by the authorities.
The Department clarified that while it serves as the registering authority for private shacks, it does not function as a licensing authority. The Vagator structure falls under its jurisdiction as it is located on the beach. However, the establishment “Birch by Romeo Lane” at Arpora, site of the recent fire incident, lies outside the scope of the Tourism Department’s regulatory authority.
Tourism Minister Shri Rohan A. Khaunte said, “The Department of Tourism has a clear mandate in areas that fall within its jurisdiction. Enforcement actions such as this are part of our ongoing drive against illegal structures, unauthorized activities, touts, and other practices that damage Goa’s tourism credibility. These are routine governance measures aimed at ensuring tourism operates in an orderly, lawful, and responsible manner.”
Director of Tourism Shri Kedar Naik added that the action was carried out fully within the legal framework. “Despite prior enforcement, the structure was rebuilt without authorization, leaving the Department with no alternative but to act in accordance with established procedures,” he stated.
The Department of Tourism reaffirmed its commitment to responsible governance and orderly development, warning that any encroachment or unauthorized activity, particularly on public or environmentally sensitive spaces, will be dealt with strictly as per law.
