New Delhi: Arunachal Pradesh Police have arrested two more men from Jammu and Kashmir in connection with an alleged espionage network accused of passing sensitive information to handlers based in Pakistan. The latest arrests took place in Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, taking the total number of accused in the case to five.
The two newly arrested individuals have been identified as Aijaz Ahmed Bhat and Bashir Ahmad Ganai. They were brought to Arunachal Pradesh and are currently in police custody as investigators continue to widen the probe. The arrests were made on December 18 following sustained surveillance and intelligence inputs pointing to their involvement in collecting and sharing classified information from different parts of the border state.
According to senior police officials, preliminary investigations suggest that the accused were actively gathering sensitive details and transmitting them to contacts operating from across the border. Forensic examination of seized materials is currently underway, and further disclosures are expected as the investigation progresses.
The case first came to light in November when police detained two residents of Kupwara district, Nazir Ahmad Malik and Sabir Ahmed Mir, based on credible intelligence about their suspected role in espionage activities. Shortly after, a third accused, Shabir Ahmed Khan, also from Kupwara, was arrested from Itanagar. With the latest developments, authorities believe they have uncovered a broader network operating within the state.
Investigators revealed that the accused frequently travelled across various districts under the guise of selling blankets and other goods. This movement allegedly allowed them to access multiple locations and discreetly collect information of strategic importance.
Police officials stated that the arrests were the result of a focused operation led by the Itanagar police, supported by intelligence agencies. Two suspects were apprehended in Jammu and Kashmir, while the remaining three were arrested from different areas within the Itanagar Capital Region.
Amid the ongoing investigation, police have urged residents to remain alert. Citizens have been advised to verify identity documents with authorities before offering rental accommodation to outsiders, warning that negligence could lead to serious legal consequences.
