PANAJI: In a firm move to safeguard public health, the FDA has destroyed two tons of Velchi bananas after they were found to be ripened using a banned chemical substance. The seizure and subsequent destruction were carried out with the assistance of the Mapusa Municipality, following lab confirmation that the fruit contained ethapone, a chemical not permitted for ripening under Indian food safety regulations.
Health Minister Vishwajit Rane confirmed the action on Thursday, stating that the laboratory analysis was conducted by an FSSAI-approved facility. “Only ethylene gas is permitted for artificial ripening under food safety norms. The use of ethapone is a serious violation, and in the interest of public health, the contaminated stock was destroyed,” he said.
The Health Minister further emphasized that the government is committed to ensuring safe and naturally ripened fruits reach consumers. “We continue to take firm steps to ensure that Goans receive food that meets safety standards. With the commendable support of the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), Goa, we are intensifying our efforts to protect the health of both Goans and tourists,” Rane added.
In response to rising concerns over food-related illnesses, the state has stepped up raids across multiple locations, targeting artificially ripened mangoes and other unsafe food items. Authorities have already taken punitive action against violators, and more crackdowns are expected in the coming weeks.
“We are strengthening enforcement and promoting safe food practices across Goa. Our efforts will gain further momentum as we act against those who compromise public health for profit,” the minister stated.
The crackdown marks a continued push by the state government to uphold food safety standards and send a clear message against adulteration and illegal practices in the food supply chain.
