PANAJI: The 21st living organ donor transplant was recently performed at Goa Medical College (GMC), and both the donor and the receiver have recovered well from the surgery.
The milestone was praised by Health Minister Vishwajit Rane, who said it is one of the elements that lead to “excellence” in Goa’s medical treatment.
“GMC performed its 21st successful living donor transplant in 2024, in which a parent gave to his son and both of them healed nicely. Surprisingly, all pre-operative procedures, including HLA testing, donor surgery, transplant surgery, and even the pricey immunosuppressive drug were given away for free, according to Rane.
The minister added that sophisticated facilities like the Z-Lab, which was just built, are increasing the ability to do intricate organ transplant procedures.
In the meantime, Goa reported 17 organ transplants in the three years between 2021 and 2023, according to a response provided to the Lok Sabha on Friday by Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav.
at response to a question from TMC member and former Indian cricket player Yusuf Pathan, Jadhav stated that five of the 17 transplants were performed in the government-run Goa Medical College, while the other nineteen were performed at private hospitals.
Additionally, Jadhav stated that the expenses for the transplants covered by CGHS are Rs 15 lakhs for a heart transplant and Rs 25 lakhs for a lung transplant. Additionally, the combined cost of a heart and lung transplant is Rs 35 lakhs.
