BAMBOLIM: The second hand surgery and rehabilitation camp run by the Swiss Foundation Groupe International Chirurgiens Amis de la Main (GICAM) has started at the Goa Medical College (GMC) Hospital Bambolim.
Enhancing sophisticated hand surgery, rehabilitation, and prosthetic care in the state is the initiative’s main goal. After GICAM’s July and August visit last year, the camp gives GMC doctors practical experience and is anticipated to help about 50 patients. Four intricate procedures were successfully completed on the first day carried out.
Dr. Shivanand M. Bandekar, dean of Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMC), told reporters during a press conference that four hand procedures were performed on Monday, January 20 at the Goa Medical College’s Super Specialty Block.
“This is our second surgery camp, and the Goa Medical College is the host hospital along with GICAM,” Dr. Bandekar stated. This time, there are five surgeons on our larger team of specialists. Between fifty and sixty patients have been chosen. In our state of Goa, these are the infrequent instances of hand issues.
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and congenital hand abnormalities are two conditions that cause patients to lose their ability to use their hands. Numerous victims need plastic surgery after suffering burns. Certain nerve injuries call for specialized care. Dr. Bandekar stated, “We began the camp today and operated on four patients. Patients who had surgeries during the previous camp are doing very well.”
“We have chosen very intriguing and challenging candidates,” said Dr. Marco Lanzetta Bertani, Head of the Mission and a world-renowned hand surgeon. Our goal is to establish a hand problem center of excellence in Goa. At GICAM, this is what we do.
