CANACONA: In a major crackdown, Canacona police arrested 40 individuals—7 organisers and 33 gamblers—during a raid on an illegal card gambling den at Shelli in Loliem-Polem, conducted in the early hours of Tuesday.
Acting on a tip-off, police raided a residence at Dulegal between 3:12 am and 6:30 am, seizing cash worth ₹5.2 lakh, 40 mobile phones valued at ₹5 lakh, a computer setup, and an Ertiga car—all totaling approximately ₹16.35 lakh.
While one of the organisers is a local resident, the others hail from various parts of Karnataka, including Kumta, Shimoga, Ankola, and Hatkeri. The 33 gamblers arrested are also from towns across Karnataka, such as Karwar, Yellapur, Honawar, and Shirshi.
The raid was led by PI Harish V Raut Dessai and a team of PSI officers and constables. All arrested persons, aged between 29 and 56, have been booked under relevant sections of the Public Gambling Act and BNS 2023.
