VERNA: A 53-year-old worker, Sudam Gaikwad was killed in a tragic accident at the Konkan Railway Yard in Verna on September 11, after being run over by a concrete mixture vehicle allegedly driven negligently by a driver without a valid licence.
According to Verna police, the incident occurred around 12:30 pm when the accused driver, identified as Subhan Alam, a resident of Verna and native of Bihar, was reversing the concrete mixer towards the Ultratech godown. On reaching near the goods shed, the vehicle dashed into Sudam Gaikwad, a native of Maharashtra, who was working on the under-construction road.
Gaikwad fell to the ground and came under the rear tyre of the vehicle, sustaining grievous injuries. He was rushed to the Primary Health Centre at Cansaulim, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Police conducted an inquest panchanama and referred the body for post-mortem examination at the South Goa District Hospital in Margao. The police surgeon certified the cause of death as “damage to chest and abdomen consequent to blunt force impact.” The body was later handed over to the family for the final rites.
Based on a complaint filed by ASI Paresh Fal Dessai, Verna police registered an offence under Sections 281 and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and Section 3 of the Motor Vehicles Act.
The investigation is being carried out by PSI Mahesh Bhomkar of Verna Police Station under the supervision of PI Anand Shirodkar and guidance of Mormugao DySP Gurudas Kadam.
