PANAJI: The Entertainment Society of Goa(ESG) and The Department of Public Health Dentistry, Goa Dental College and Hospital in collaboration with National Tobacco Control Programme, Directorate of Health Services, Goa commemorated ‘THE WORLD NO TOBACCO DAY’ by organizing “6th Goa Anti Tobacco Film Festival 2024” on 31st May 2024 at 4.30 pm at Auditorium 1, Maquinez Palace, ESG.
Those present on the dais were Chief Guest Delilah M. Lobo, MLA Siolim Constituency & Vice Chairman, ESG, Guest of Honour Dr. Shekhar Salkar, Onco-Surgeon, Chief of Department of Surgical Oncology, Manipal Hospital, Goa and Dr. Amita Kenkre Kamat, Dentist and Professor, Goa Dental College.
The theme for this year’s festival was “Protecting Children from tobacco industry interference”. The competition was held in two sections, National Section Ad films. and Goan section Ad films. We had received the following entries:-
National Section: – Ad Films = 10
Goan Section: – Ad Films = 13
We had 3 members Jury, Dr Jagdish Kakodkar, Professor and Head, Department of Community Medicine, GMC & Hospital, Dr Manisha Khorate , Professor & Head, Department of Oral Medicine & Radiology, GDC & Hospital and Shri. Ramnath Raikar, Senior Journalist & Writer on Cinema, who judged all the entries of ad films.
The winners of Ad Film for National Section:
1st Prize Winner of Rs. 100000/- – GENHIT MEIN JAARI
2nd Prize Winner of Rs. 50000/- – PILGI
3rd Prize Winner of Rs. 30000/- – BACCHO KO BACCHAO
The winners of Ad Film for Goa Section:
1st Prize Winner of Rs. 50000/- – BHUTI
2nd Prize Winner of Rs. 30000/- – SHAHANPANA
3rd Prize Winner of Rs. 20000/- – WINGS OF REGRET
Dr Amita Kenkre Kamat of Goa Dental College welcomed the gathering and also briefed the purpose of this festival and said that the aim of the Anti Tobacco Film Festival was to spread the message of harmful or ill effects of tobacco use. She also said that nowadays e-cigarettes have become common among the young generation. It is not an alternative as it also has high level of nicotine and causes lung injuries. She also thanked the participants and audience present.
Dr. Shekhar Salkar in his speech said that smoking is a slow poison and gateway to the drugs is smoking. He also highlighted today’s theme. Further he said that Goa is the best state with less consumption of cigarettes. Every individual and Media should take social initiative and continuous effort to fight against tobacco and its ill effects. Teachers should identify students and counsel them based on their behavior.
Mrs. Delilah M. Lobo, MLA Siolim Constituency & Vice Chairman, ESG said that that ESG in association with The Department of Public Health Dentistry, Goa Dental College and Hospital has been successfully organizing this festival since 2017 and it has become the calendar event thereon. She also quoted that Life is a beautiful gift God has given and not to spoil it by smoking. Parents and teachers should see that their children should not fall prey to tobacco. She also thanked the participants for taking efforts to make the films.
