PORVORIM: In an effort to address the escalating garbage problem, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant said that the village panchayat will be required to collect house tax and garbage tax from all inhabitants, including those who are renting.
Sawant brought up the fact that 70% of village panchayats do not adequately handle waste during the solid waste management (SWM) review meeting.
The government will keep an eye on these panchayats. Additionally, it was agreed to penalize businesses and private places that fail to separate their garbage.
The Chief Minister advised village panchayats to keep their areas clean and to use the monies provided by the 15th Finance Commission for Swachha Bharat Mission Gramin, which is a program of the Union and State governments.
According to Sawant, the local panchayats are responsible for separating the rubbish and sending out circulars to shacks and hotels. In order to improve administration, he added, the government will turn over the management of the restrooms under the Department of Tourism to the panchayats.
“Our mission is Swachh Goem, Sundar Goem, and everyone should work together to achieve it,” Sawant stated.
All local panchayats have been requested by the chief minister to pick contractors and nominate them to the Goa Waste Management Corporation. In addition to being given a timeline to expedite the procedure over the next two months, the panchayats have requested that sheds be erected.
In order to handle all waste types, including biodegradable, non-biodegradable, industrial, and hazardous trash, Sawant stated that he would also call a meeting of all relevant departments, contractors, and stakeholders. The government will make sure that there is no trash left across the state after investing a significant sum of money.
