PANAJI: Fisheries Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar said that there is a 8% decrease in the catch of clams (khube) in Agassaim area.
“As per the records, there is a 8% decrease in the catch of clams (khube) in Agassaim area. Department has not conducted any scientific study in this matter<‘ said Halarnkar
He further said that the Goa State Biodiversity Board has notified the Guidelines/recommendations for sustainable utilization, conservation and management of bio-resources with special emphasis on controlled harvesting and conservation of edible clams.
“Also other shell fish & critical bio-resources within the jurisdiction of the Biodiversity Management Committees along the riverine & coastal areas in the State of Goa,” he informed
Minister also said that Fisheries Officer/Fisheries Surveyors had conducted surveyof thelong established sites of shellfish breeding zones (which also includes clams) in consultation with the local fishermen.
