GOA: The incessant rains, which have continued to cause havoc in Goa since Sunday, resulted in the third landslide in Pernem along NH 66, thus disrupting traffic.
The NH66 is being constructed by MV Rao, the son-in-law of the top central leader.
Shockingly, yet again, a retaining wall collapsed on NH66 along the Naibag-Poraskade road due to heavy rains. Due to the landslide, both lanes have been blocked.
The frequent landslides have raised questions over the quality of highway expansion work carried out by MVR, the contractor.
The retaining wall, which had developed a crack two weeks ago, was further damaged due to the falling boulders.
Congress accused the government of corruption and demanded the blacklisting of the contractor responsible.
“Another Landslide in Pernem on National Highway-66. Anticipating backlash from People, BJP’s Son-in-Law Contractor MVR Infra may be trying to block the road & stop Union Minister Nitin Gadkari from coming to Pernem.
“Shame on Fraud #ViksitBharat of PM Modi, CM Pramod Sawant must Arrest & Blacklist Contractor Immediately,” said Patkar
For the third day in a row, Goa has been experiencing intense rain, which has caused significant disruption. A red alert has been issued by IMD for the state due to the possibility of heavy to extremely heavy precipitation.
Five people have died as a result of landslides caused by the havoc the rains have caused. Heavy traffic jams have been reported in several Goan locations, including Panaji and Porvorim, as a result of the persistent downpours.
Particularly impacted was the traffic entering Panaji city, with cars backed up for nearly an hour near the Kadamba bus stop. From Divja Circle to Panaji Market, there was also reported to be extremely bad traffic.
The State’s low-lying areas continued to flood, with water seeping into homes in multiple locations. The water logging caused many shops and commercial establishments to close.
Rains have also revealed poor construction work related to Panaji’s Smart City project. With almost a thousand calls in the last three days, firefighters had their hands full.
With 235 mm of rain falling on the day, July 8 was the wettest day of the season, according to IMD. 26 per cent of the season’s access rains have already fallen in the State.
On Sunday night, the largest reservoir in the state, Selaulim Dam, was filled to capacity, according to the Department of water resources.
The only bridge that connects Avem village to Canacona town, however, is in dangerous condition, according to the locals, who fear that if it collapses, they will be cut off entirely. Avem Village is located close to Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary.
Locals in Mayem, North Goa, claim that the situation there was comparable due to a flooded road that connected the village to other areas.
“Heavy to very heavy rainfall spell with isolated extremely heavy rainfall likely over Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and coastal Karnataka today and Heavy to very heavy rainfall during subsequent 4-5 days,” IMD said in its latest weather forecast.
Rainfall received in the last 24 hours till 8.30 am today morning at various locations in Goa as per stats released by IMD was as follows – Panaji – 87.6 mm, Mapusa- 115.2 mm, Ela(Old Goa) -69.0 mm, Pernem- 192.0 mm, Sanquelim – 64.8 mm, Valpoi- 78.2mm, Sanguem – 39.6mm, Margao – 62.6 mm, Dabolim – 89.0 mm, Mormugao 93.6 mm, Canacona- 57.2 mm, Ponda -73.4 mm, Queen – 40.0 mm.
