PERNEM: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Goa has welcomed the commencement of pothole-filling work on the Tuem IDC Road, just three days after AAP leader Suvarna Harmalkar highlighted its poor condition in a live video on November 1. However, the party has urged the government to fully recarpet the road instead of carrying out temporary jetpatcher repairs.
Addressing the media at the site, Harmalkar said, “We had done a live from this very road on November 1 demanding urgent repair. Within three days, the government has started filling potholes using a jetpatcher machine — it shows the power of people’s voice. While we welcome this quick response, this patchwork is not enough. Crores worth of tenders have already been issued for road works in Pernem taluka. When will that money be used to recarpet the entire road properly?”
She also questioned the Chief Minister’s earlier assurance to repair all Goan roads within 15 days. “Is this the kind of repair he meant? If the government wants to do only patchwork, then why are crores being spent on road contracts? This is just a quick-fix solution, not a long-term one,” she remarked.
Harmalkar further cautioned that jetpatcher work is a temporary fix that often fails during Goa’s heavy monsoons. “These patches don’t last one spell of rain and only waste public funds. We demand that the Tuem IDC road and other major roads in Pernem be fully recarpeted to ensure long-term safety and durability,” she added.
The AAP leader said the swift response shows that public pressure is working, but stressed that Goans deserve quality, durable roads, not cosmetic repairs. The party stated that it will continue to monitor the works and warned of protests if taxpayers’ money is wasted on short-lived patchwork.
