Panaji: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has secured its first corporator in the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) after party leader Jack Sukhija won from Ward 17 as part of the Ami Ponjekar panel in the recently held CCP elections.
Sukhija, who is also the assembly president of AAP in Panaji, contested the elections along with AAP leader Uma Volvoikar under the AAP-backed Ami Ponjekar panel. With Sukhija’s victory, AAP has entered the Panaji municipal body for the first time.
The party described the win as a sign of the growing trust of Panaji’s citizens in clean, transparent and people-centric politics advocated by the Aam Aadmi Party.
AAP National Convenor Arvind Kejriwal congratulated Sukhija and the Goa unit through a post on social media platform X, extending his best wishes for effective public service. AAP Goa Prabhari Atishi also congratulated Sukhija and expressed confidence that he would become a strong voice for the people of Panaji while carrying forward the legacy of his grandfather, Dr Jack de Sequeira.
Reacting to his victory, Sukhija thanked AAP Goa President Valmiki Naik, party MLAs Venzy Viegas and Cruz Silva, along with party leaders and volunteers for their support during the campaign.
“This victory belongs to the people of Panaji who chose honest and people-centric politics. I am grateful to the voters for their trust. I will work to continue the legacy of my grandfather Dr Jack de Sequeira through dedicated service, protect the identity of Panaji and Goa, and address the concerns of its citizens,” Sukhija said.
AAP Goa State President Valmiki Naik said the victory shows that people value strong and responsible leadership. He stated that Panaji has elected a corporator who will raise issues affecting the city.
“Just as our MLAs have raised strong voices in the Goa Assembly, our corporator will raise the concerns of Panaji with the same determination,” Naik said.
The party also alleged that attempts were made to weaken the Ami Ponjekar panel through delimitation, electoral rolls and reservation patterns, but voters ultimately supported their candidate committed to public service.
AAP Goa expressed confidence that its newly elected corporator will work towards the development of Panaji and ensure that citizens’ concerns are effectively represented in the CCP.
