Aam Aadmi Party sprung a surprise at the Margao municipality by gifting brooms to the sanitation workers at the start of the afternoon shift. Aap leaders Sidharth Karapurkar, Ramiro Mascarenhas among others who were present distributed brand new brooms to about 25 workers who had gathered for their roll call, after ‘learning about the problems faced due to council’s apathy’. Karapurkar later said that the municipal workers were not able to satisfactorily discharge their duty as the Council had failed to supply brooms to the workers in time.
“The municipal workers do a good job in keeping the city clean but need basic items like brooms in time. We noticed that they lacked proper brooms. We felt that broom being the symbol of cleanliness, we should do a symbolic act of giving some brooms for the welfare of our own citizens ” said Karapurkar adding that it was time every Goan held a broom in hand to clear the political dirt from Goa. He further said that the political dirt in the state was choking the lifelines of the common man even when it came to providing basic services such as health care as was seen in what he called as a pathetic response to covid. He said that the broom was required to sweep away political dirt for the sake of generations ahead whose future would otherwise be bleak indicating that AAP with broom as the symbol was the option.
Meanwhile Ramiro Mascarenhas said that business had been practically shut during the past few months. But he said that it had not stopped the Council from collecting garbage fees from businesses although they had not generated any garbage. “When all establishments were closed for a prolonged period and garbage not generated, garbage fees were charged without concern. Why can’t the Council be rational?” asked Mascarenhas
