New Delhi: Indian cricket team opener Abhishek Sharma has been admitted to hospital in New Delhi after suffering from a severe stomach infection, raising doubts over his availability for the upcoming T20 World Cup group match against Namibia. The left handed batter is currently under medical observation and further tests are being conducted to determine the exact cause of the illness.
Reports suggest that Abhishek was feeling unwell even before India’s previous encounter against the United States, but his condition deteriorated after the game. He was running a high fever and required drips for immediate treatment. Due to his health issues, the young batter skipped the team’s practice session at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate confirmed that the player was still struggling with stomach related problems. He expressed hope that Abhishek could recover in time but admitted that his participation in the Namibia fixture remained uncertain. Team management is closely monitoring his progress over the next two days.
During the match against the USA, Abhishek was dismissed for a first ball duck and did not take the field when India bowled. Wicketkeeper batter Sanju Samson fielded in his place for the entire innings. Abhishek was also absent from the post match handshakes, indicating that he was already unwell at that stage.
Sources within the cricket board said doctors are conducting multiple tests to assess the seriousness of the infection. At present it is unclear when he will be discharged from hospital, making his inclusion in the playing eleven highly doubtful.
Meanwhile, the team received a boost with all rounder Washington Sundar joining the squad ahead of the Namibia clash scheduled for February 12. The assistant coach also provided an update on fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah, stating that he has resumed bowling after a short break and is feeling much better.
Reflecting on India’s victory over the USA, ten Doeschate praised captain Suryakumar Yadav for guiding the team out of trouble with a composed performance. He said the skipper’s leadership and experience were crucial in securing the win as India continue their World Cup campaign.
