New Delhi: South Africa T20I captain Aiden Markram has emphasized the importance of dismissing India’s young opener Abhishek Sharma, describing him as a fearless player who embodies the aggressive, modern approach to T20 cricket. Markram, who previously shared the field with Sharma at Sunrisers Hyderabad, spoke highly of the 25-year-old left-hander and acknowledged the challenge he presents.
“Abhi is a fantastic player and a great guy. Getting him out early would be a significant advantage for us,” Markram said ahead of the five-match T20I series opener at Barabati Stadium. He noted that the modern T20 game is increasingly driven by young batsmen willing to take risks from the very first ball, making the format both entertaining and unpredictable.
“Players now are given the freedom to take the game on, and when it works, it can put the team in a strong position. The younger generation naturally plays this way because it not only entertains but also opens doors for opportunities in leagues and international cricket,” he added.
Markram also touched on the upcoming IPL auction in Abu Dhabi on December 16, highlighting that while players may aim to impress, the main focus remains on team performance and preparation for the T20 World Cup in February.
South Africa, who finished as runners-up in last year’s T20 World Cup, have struggled in bilateral series since then, losing to teams including India, Australia, and Pakistan. Despite these setbacks, Markram insists the team will continue to play their natural, attacking brand of cricket. “We want our players to enjoy the game, express their skills, and keep the T20 format entertaining,” he said.
The team will finalize its playing XI closer to the match, but Markram expressed confidence in players with prior success at Barabati Stadium, noting it could boost their confidence. The return of pacer Anrich Nortje, who last played in the T20 World Cup final, is seen as a significant advantage, while injuries have provided opportunities for emerging fast bowlers.
Markram expects favorable batting conditions and high-scoring encounters. “We anticipate good pitches and competitive games, but we will adapt as needed. Tomorrow marks an important start, and we hope to set the tone for the series,” he concluded.
