PORVORIM: The Goa State Pollution Control Board’s criteria were adopted by the Goa Legislative Assembly on Wednesday night, amending the Goa Irrigation Act, 2024 and imposing a penalty on bulk water users who do not cleanse sewage before releasing it.
The amendment was approved by the House. The bill, which was introduced by State Water Resources Department Minister Subhash Shirodkar, adds a new clause to the Goa Irrigation Act, 2024 that imposes fines on bulk water users who neglect to treat sewage before releasing it into the environment.
The amendment states that the bulk user would be penalized Rs 10 for each cubic meter of water that is delivered to him if he disregards this rule.
“Any person including an institution, a company or an establishment, whether Government or not, including restaurant, hotel, multi-dwelling unit, water treatment plant, desalination plant, or any other commercial or industrial establishment, or an establishment dealing with activity of construction, whose consumption of water exceeds 30 cubic meters per day,” is defined by the Act as a bulk user of water.
