VASCO: Social activists in Vasco have expressed their discontent with Minister Mauvin Godinho’s statement against Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Chief Officer Deepesh Priolkar, accusing him of inefficiency and incompetence. Hours after the minister’s remarks, Priolkar was transferred, prompting activists to demand his reinstatement and threaten agitation if their demand is not met.
Describing Priolkar as an honest and non-corrupt officer, activists have also urged Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar to address the issue with Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant. They insist on prioritizing Priolkar’s return to his position at MMC.
Activist Xencor Polgi criticized Godinho’s comments, stating, “I spent an entire day investigating the minister’s statement and spoke to councillors and MMC staff. Everyone unanimously said Priolkar was a gift to the MMC and the most efficient officer in its history. It is unacceptable that officers doing commendable work are transferred simply for not complying with political demands.”
Polgi pointed out that corrupt panchayat secretaries continue to hold their positions despite numerous complaints, while an honest officer like Priolkar was transferred overnight. “Priolkar was instrumental in transforming the MMC from a financially struggling institution into a cash-rich body. He initiated recoveries, resolved decade-old deadlocks, and ensured maximum revenue for the council. Thanks to him, the MMC, which once struggled to pay salaries, has implemented the seventh pay scale and cleared dues of retired staff and pensioners after years,” Polgi said.
The activists accused the government of engaging in “cheap politics” and questioned the transparency promised by CM Dr. Pramod Sawant. They asserted that Priolkar’s refusal to yield to political pressure led to his abrupt transfer.
“We want to inform the government that we may have to resort to agitation if Priolkar is not reinstated as MMC Chief Officer. We also request Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar to intervene with the CM and ensure Priolkar’s return,” Polgi added.
“The MMC staff and workers reportedly feel demotivated and saddened by the decision, viewing Priolkar as a fair, transparent, and hardworking officer who served the people without bias.” Added Polgi
