PANAJI: In order to address residents’ cardiac emergencies, the state government has now mandated that housing buildings with 50 apartments or more have a designated area and install automatic external defibrillators (AEDs).
In a notification released earlier this week, the Goa Public Health Act’s regulations were modified to include the additional requirement that large residential complexes have the facility.
One of the three new regulations included in the announcement stated, “Every residential complex consisting of 50 or more flats/units shall provide space for provision of Automated External Defibrillator (AED) which shall be strategically located and easily accessible to occupants of the building.”
AEDs restore a person’s heartbeat and perform resuscitation by using electric current.
It’s interesting to note that the notification also mandates that at least 25% of the complex’s residents complete certified basic first responder training.
It stated that in addition to other life-saving techniques that can be extremely helpful in the event of a cardiac or other medical emergency, the training must cover automated external defibrillator use and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation.
According to the new rule, agencies that have received government certification must offer the training.
