PANAJI: The southwest monsoon crossed 100 inches mark in the coastal State that has recorded over 108 inches of rains since June 1, slightly above the normal average.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) Goa observatory has put the State on Orange Alert till September 7, wherein State is likely to receive heavy to very heavy showers.
IMD said that with the likely formation of a low-pressure area over north and adjoining central Bay of Bengal during the next 48 hours, monsoon activity may strengthen over south Konkan and Goa in the coming days.
“Very heavy rainfall is very likely at one or two places over the districts of Goa on September 6 and 7. Likelihood of heavy rainfall (64.5–115.5 mm in 24 hours) continues over North and South Goa districts for about a week from September 6, with scattered and isolated spatial distributions,” the IMD said.
The month of August recorded only 14 inches of rains, a total of 49 per cent deficit from its average normal, which is the lowest since one decade.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Saturday had put state administration has been put on high alert amid a warning issued by the IMD about heavy rainfall in the State over the next 48 hours.
