CANACONA: The Agonda Gramsabha witnessed a heated debate over the installation of a fourth mobile tower within 100 meters of an existing tower in a residential area, alongside issues regarding app-based taxi operations in the village.
Residents raised concerns over potential radiation effects, claiming a decline in coconut sizes and disappearance of five bird species. Countering these claims, other villagers argued that bird species continue to thrive, with nests observed on existing mobile towers, and stressed the need for adequate network coverage in the digital era. Ex-Sarpanch Badal Naikgaunkar dismissed radiation concerns as a myth.
Sarpanch Nilesh Pagui clarified that the panchayat has not issued any NOC for the tower. However, citing correspondence from the Deputy Collector and Directorate of Panchayats, he noted that the local body has no authority over mobile tower installations. Pagui agreed to formally communicate residents’ concerns to higher authorities.
A resolution was also proposed to restrict app-based taxis from operating in the village, protecting local taxi operators who face competition from outsiders servicing resorts and hotels. Concerns were raised about unauthorised touts, harassment by kayak operators, non-permitted rental boards, stray cattle, and deteriorated roads including MDR49, beach road, and internal village roads.
Highlighting the importance of tourism to Agonda’s economy, Pagui stated that nearly 80% of locals depend on tourism, and vowed to prioritise local businesses while ensuring environmental protection. He also announced plans for road black-topping, installation of CCTV cameras at strategic points, and action against illegal outside businesses.
Several residents, including Marcus Fernandes, Barsat Naikgaunkar, Kiran Naikgaunkar, Melvyn Fernandes, Ramnath Naik Gaunkar, Franklin Borges, and others actively participated in the discussion. Observers from the BDO office and Secretary Amol K Naikgaunkar were present, along with most panch members.
The Gramsabha concluded with a clear message that Agonda’s local enterprises and environment will be protected, and outside entities operating without approvals will face strict action.
