CANACONA: The Agonda Village Panchayat on Wednesday physically intervened to halt ongoing illegal construction activity in the village, nearly 20 days after issuing a stop-work order against the alleged violators.
Acting on a complaint, the panchayat team led by Sarpanch Nilesh Pagi, Ward Panch Fatima Rodrigues, and Panchayat Secretary Amol K. Naik Gaunkar inspected the site at Survey No. 118/8 (non-promulgated area) in Agonda, where illegal structures were reportedly being erected.
The panchayat had earlier, through a notice dated October 1, 2025, directed Gauri Asnotikar to immediately cease construction and submit documents proving ownership, along with necessary NOCs and construction licences, within seven days.
However, complainant Ferdinando Fernandes alleged that despite the order, the construction had continued unabated and even intensified. Following this, the panchayat conducted the site inspection and confirmed that the illegal works were progressing.
During the inspection, in the absence of the property owner, the panchayat issued verbal instructions to halt all activity and obtained a written undertaking from individuals reportedly leasing the property for tourism-related development.
