CANACONA: The Agonda Gram Sabha on Sunday unanimously demanded immediate removal of five speed breakers on the MDR-49 road, which villagers said were erected without the panchayat’s request and have now turned into accident spots.
Residents pointed out that while the panchayat had earlier identified accident-prone stretches and requested specific speed breakers, district authorities had gone ahead and constructed additional humps between Devaghaga and Parvem. Villagers complained that instead of preventing mishaps, these extra humps have caused more accidents.
After discussions, the Gram Sabha resolved to remove two speed breakers on the Bokdamoll-Agonda slope, two of the three humps at Sawantwada, and another one at a different location along MDR-49. “If people do not want some of these speed breakers, we will accordingly represent to the district authorities concerned to remove them,” assured Sarpanch Nilesh Pagui.
The Gram Sabha also approved a proposal to revise house tax to a minimum of ₹100 for tiled houses and ₹500 for terraced houses. Other issues discussed included stray dogs and cattle menace on roads, an illegal gate allegedly blocking access to the beach at Vall side, and complaints of uncleaned gutters in Parvem.
Sarpanch Pagui and Secretary Amol Naik Gaunkar informed that the new Bhandara in Mudkud ward would address water shortage in the village. Coastal residents of Dhavalkhazan also raised concerns about increasing bat menace along the shore.
The Gram Sabha passed a special resolution thanking Speaker and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar, Power Minister, Electricity Department, and Chief Minister Pramod Sawant for sanctioning the ₹70-crore underground cabling project for Agonda.
Pagui appealed to residents to support ongoing development works and help make Agonda a garbage-free village.
Among those present were Dy Sarpanch Karuna Phaldesai, Panch members Preettal Fernandes, John Fernandes, Secretary Amol Naik Gaunkar, and BDO Observer Rakshanda Pagi.
