New Delhi: Investigators are probing four possible causes behind the tragic crash of Air India Flight AI-171 near Ahmedabad on Thursday, including a suspected bird strike, double-engine failure, fuel contamination, and aircraft overloading. The flight, bound for London with 242 people on board, went down just minutes after take-off, crashing into a medical college hostel mess and killing 241 people. Several people on the ground also suffered injuries.
The only survivor, Ramesh Vishvakumar, has provided vital testimony, stating that within a minute of take-off, the aircraft appeared to lose power. He described a sudden acceleration and lurching motion before the crash, raising the possibility of a complete engine shutdown. Investigators are now analysing data from the flight data recorder and radar systems, while also reviewing the aircraft’s maintenance logs to check for any missed inspections or overdue repairs.
Over 200 DNA samples have been collected for identification of victims. On Friday morning, one full body and several body parts were recovered from the crash site. Five mortal remains have been handed over to families after post-mortems.
The technical probe is also focusing on fuel load, passenger count, and baggage weight, particularly since high temperatures and thin air can affect engine performance and avionics.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Ahmedabad on Friday to review the situation. He visited the crash site and later met the lone survivor and other injured individuals at the Civil Hospital.
“Visited the crash site in Ahmedabad today. The scene of devastation is saddening. Met officials and teams working tirelessly in the aftermath. Our thoughts remain with those who lost their loved ones in this unimaginable tragedy,” PM Modi wrote on X.
