New Delhi: In a significant development in the investigation into the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad, authorities have successfully retrieved and accessed data from the black box of the ill-fated aircraft. Officials confirmed on Thursday that the memory module from the front black box of the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner has been successfully downloaded, providing critical flight data that could help determine the cause of the disaster.
The crash occurred on June 12, when a London-bound Air India flight veered off course and plunged into a hostel complex shortly after take-off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, claiming 270 lives, including 241 passengers and crew. One passenger miraculously survived the devastating impact.
Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu had earlier confirmed that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) was conducting the probe and dismissed speculation that the black box would be sent abroad for analysis. “Our investigation agencies are fully equipped to handle this. There’s no need to send the black box overseas,” he said on June 24.
The black box, which includes both the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR), was recovered from the crash site on June 13, a day after the incident. These devices are essential in reconstructing the final moments of a flight, as they store data related to the aircraft’s speed, altitude, engine status, and cockpit communications.
Following the crash, the government constituted a high-level panel to thoroughly investigate the causes. Officials confirmed that the probe is progressing smoothly, aided by the black box data.
Air India’s CEO and MD, Campbell Wilson, addressed the tragedy in a message to passengers and stakeholders. He stated that the aircraft was “well-maintained”, having undergone a comprehensive check in June 2023, with the next scheduled for December 2025. However, in light of the incident, Air India has decided to temporarily reduce its wide-body fleet operations by 15%, a move that may impact international travel plans.
“This has been an incredibly difficult time for everyone at Air India. Our thoughts are with the families of those who lost their lives, and we are committed to cooperating fully with the investigation,” Wilson added.
The crash has sent shockwaves through the aviation community and raised renewed concerns about flight safety standards. The recovered black box data is now expected to play a crucial role in determining the technical and human factors behind the crash, with further updates from the investigation panel anticipated in the coming weeks.
