Panaji: The Goa unit of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has demanded a judicial inquiry following a tragic fire at Vijay Marine Shipyard in Rassaim, Loutolim, which resulted in the deaths of three workers and left four others critically injured.
The fire is reported to have broken out during welding work inside a confined section of a vessel under repair.
AITUC General Secretary Christopher Fonseca condemned the incident, describing it as “gruesome,” and called for the temporary closure of the shipyard until the investigation was complete.
He alleged that safety norms were violated and criticised the Inspectorate of Factories and Boilers, Government of Goa, for failing to enforce regulations at ship-repair facilities.
The union has formally requested the Chief Minister to ensure prompt compensation for the bereaved families under the Workmen’s Compensation Act and to provide immediate financial assistance to the injured workers.
It has also pressed for strict legal action against those responsible for the lapses that led to the accident.
