New Delhi: National Security Advisor Ajit Doval on Friday underscored the pivotal role of governance in shaping a nation’s strength and stability, stressing that poor administration often leads to political upheaval. Speaking at an event marking Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, he said effective governance is essential for both nation-building and securing the aspirations of citizens.
Doval noted that modern governance faces a growing challenge as citizens have become increasingly aware and expectant of the state’s performance. He pointed out that the government has a responsibility to ensure people’s satisfaction, as discontent can destabilize national order. Citing examples from the region, he said weak governance had led to regime changes in countries like Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal through non-institutional means.
“The strength of a nation lies in how well it is governed,” he said, emphasizing that the foundation of national progress rests on strong institutions and those who build and sustain them.
He praised India’s current governance model under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing it as an “orbital shift” that has transformed both domestic systems and India’s global standing. Doval highlighted recent institutional reforms aimed at tackling corruption, suggesting that further measures could follow.
Drawing inspiration from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Doval said clarity of vision and resilience during adversity were key elements of successful leadership. He credited Patel for unifying the country after Independence and establishing the all-India services framework that continues to uphold administrative strength.
The NSA also emphasized that good governance must ensure safety, equality, and empowerment, particularly for women. He called women’s empowerment a vital component of modern administration, stressing that effective implementation of laws and systems is as important as their creation.
Highlighting the role of technology, Doval urged greater use of digital tools to enhance transparency, accountability, and service delivery while warning against emerging threats like cyberattacks that could undermine governance.
