ALDONA: A horrifying incident of animal cruelty has left residents of Khoirut, Aldona, outraged after a pet dog was shot in the face on Sunday, suffering a fractured jaw and broken teeth.
The injured dog, belonging to local resident Vishal Ghadi, returned home bleeding profusely and in visible agony. The family, devastated by the brutal act, described their pet as gentle and non-aggressive.
“She was a loving, quiet dog who never caused any trouble. We are shattered and cannot understand why anyone would harm her,” said Ghadi, struggling to contain his distress.
According to his account to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), the incident took place early Sunday morning. The family heard a gunshot before the wounded dog limped back home, trembling and covered in blood.
She was immediately taken to a private veterinary clinic in Aldona, where X-rays revealed severe facial injuries caused by a close-range gunshot. The bullet shattered her jawbone, and several fragments remain lodged in her mouth. The animal is currently under treatment but is unable to eat or drink due to the extent of her injuries.
SPCA Executive Secretary Dexter Braganza confirmed that the organisation will be filing a formal complaint with the Mapusa Police under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
“This was a calculated act of cruelty. We will ensure the case is investigated thoroughly and the perpetrator brought to justice,” Braganza said.
The shocking incident has provoked widespread anger among Aldona residents and animal welfare advocates, who have condemned the act as “inhuman” and “barbaric.”
As the community rallies behind the grieving family, the search for the person responsible continues — leaving behind a disturbing reminder of growing cruelty towards animals in Goa.
