PANAJI: The 1st Simon Barreto Memorial inter village football tournament kicked off in style as Fr. Agnelo YSC Paroda delivered a resounding 5-0 victory over Benfica Youth Club. The match, held at the DYSA ground in Curtorim, was a testament to the prowess of Fr. Agnelo YSC Paroda, with Alfiano Fernandes stealing the show with a hat-trick.
The tournament, organized by Maina Sports Club, was declared open by Alfred Barreto, the former president of Maina Sports Club, setting the stage for an exciting competition. From the outset, Fr. Agnelo YSC Paroda demonstrated their dominance, scoring early and often to secure their place in the quarterfinals.
The match began with a slow pace, but it didn’t take long for Fr. Agnelo YSC Paroda to take control. Ashwan Fernandes opened the scoring in the 2nd minute, setting the tone for the rest of the game. Despite Benfica Youth Club’s efforts, they were unable to find the back of the net, with Dominic missing a crucial equalizer opportunity. By the 27th minute, Alfiano Fernandes had doubled the lead, and Fr. Agnelo YSC Paroda went into the halftime break with a 2-0 advantage.
The second half saw Fr. Agnelo YSC Paroda continue their onslaught. Alfiano Fernandes completed his hat-trick with goals in the 37th and 44th minutes, while Savio Vales added the final goal in the 47th minute. Benfica Youth Club’s Sushant Borkar made a solo effort in injury time, but it was saved by the Paroda goalkeeper, sealing the 5-0 win for Fr. Agnelo YSC Paroda.
Sushant Borkar of Benfica Youth Club was recognized for his efforts, being awarded the man of the match. The tournament’s opening ceremony, led by Alfred Barreto, marked the beginning of what promises to be an exciting competition.
