New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded India’s women’s cricket team for their historic triumph in the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2025, marking the nation’s first-ever victory in the tournament. Speaking at the Emerging Science, Technology and Innovation Conclave (ESTIC) 2025 in Delhi, PM Modi said, “This event is related to science. But first, I will talk about India’s spectacular victory in cricket. All of India is overjoyed with the success of its cricket team. This is India’s first Women’s World Cup. I congratulate our women’s cricket team. We are proud of you. Your success will inspire millions of young people across the country.”
India’s win in the final was a fitting conclusion to a challenging World Cup campaign. After losing three matches in a row earlier in the tournament, including one against South Africa, the team bounced back with determination and skill. In the final at DY Patil Stadium, India defeated South Africa by 52 runs in front of a full house, showcasing exceptional teamwork and tenacity.
Shafali Verma emerged as the surprise hero of the match. Joining the squad as a last-minute replacement before the knockout stages, she scored a quick and powerful 87 runs, propelling India to a total of 298 for 7. She also contributed with the ball, taking two key wickets that turned the game in India’s favour after South Africa’s captain Laura Wolvaardt had scored a brilliant 101, her second consecutive century. For her all-round performance, Shafali was named Player of the Match.
Deepti Sharma also delivered a match-winning performance, scoring 58 runs off 58 balls and taking five wickets for 39 runs. Her outstanding form throughout the tournament, including 22 wickets and 215 runs, earned her the Player of the Tournament award. After Wolvaardt’s dismissal, South Africa struggled to maintain the chase and were bowled out for 246 in 46 overs, handing India a historic 52-run victory.
This landmark win not only brings glory to Indian women’s cricket but also serves as an inspiration for young athletes across the country, reinforcing the growing prominence and competitiveness of women’s sports in India.
