New Delhi: Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Thursday said that all political parties extended unanimous support to the Centre’s tough stance on terrorism during an all-party meeting convened in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 civilians earlier this week.
Speaking after the high-level discussion, Rijiju emphasized that the meeting reflected a strong and united national front, with leaders across the political spectrum backing the government’s response and any future actions in the fight against terror.
“The entire House stood in solidarity. All parties agreed that there must be zero tolerance towards terrorism,” Rijiju said.
“Some members sought clarifications, which were provided by officials. All parties also appealed for unity across the country during this time of national grief,” he added.
Diplomatic Fallout Escalates
Following the deadly attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, the Indian government launched a series of strong diplomatic and strategic responses, including:
• Downgrading of diplomatic ties with Pakistan
• Closure of the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Attari
• Suspension of the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES) for Pakistani nationals
• Reduction in staff strength at Indian and Pakistani High Commissions
• Suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, signed in 1960
In retaliation, Pakistan declared that any attempt by India to divert waters under the treaty would be treated as an “act of war.” Islamabad also escalated its own measures:
• Suspension of all trade and bilateral agreements, including the Simla Agreement of 1972
• Closure of the Wagah Border Post
• Cancellation of all SAARC Visa Exemptions for Indian citizens, except for Sikh pilgrims
• Closure of airspace and visa facilities for Indian nationals
Border Tensions Simmer
Amid rising tensions, the Pakistan Army initiated small arms firing along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, which drew a swift and effective response from the Indian Army. Simultaneously, security operations were ongoing in Bandipora, while an encounter in Udhampur claimed the life of one Indian soldier.
The all-party meeting and subsequent developments underscore the Indian government’s emphasis on national unity and decisive action in the face of terror, while border and diplomatic tensions with Pakistan continue to escalate.
