LOUTOLIM: The demarcation of the new Borim bridge was called off by PWD officials following resistance by Loutolim farmers and villagers.
The village’s farmers have been fiercely opposing the land acquisition procedure. Their worries are rooted in their conviction that this project will ruin their priceless fields including the ancient khazan fields and endanger both their way of life and the livelihood of the nearby fishermen.
Not only are farmer groups in Loutolim opposed to the proposed plans, but they are also opposed to the land acquisition process in neighbouring Borim.
Tensions remain high as the local farming community and villagers continue to protest and object to the authorities’ plans to conduct the demarcation survey.
Earlier, Loutolim Villagers yet again objected to the demarcation of land at Lotoulim for the Borim bridge approach road.
Locals gathered in large numbers at the site at Lotoulim where officials were trying to demarcate the land amidst heavy police presence.
Locals are up in arms against the work alleging that their Khazan lands and environment will be heavily affected due to the bridge work.
The villagers assembled at the location, unfazed by the warning, and continued to express their opposition to the project’s proposed land demarcation procedures.
Locals said that they are opposing the work alleging that the proposed bridge will lead to large-scale destruction of agricultural land and the khazan ecosystem.
The agitated villagers prevented the PWD officials and the consultants from carrying out any demarcation or survey work in the proposed area.
The Loutolim Tenants Association’s chairman, Albert Pinheiro, told reporters that the continuous unrest is a determined attempt to protect their priceless agricultural land.
He emphasized the villagers’ unwavering determination, saying that the protest will continue until real progress is made.
“Our agricultural fields are under immediate threat from the proposed new Borim Bridge, a livelihood we are unwilling to give up,” villagers added.
The inequity of moving forward without giving the objections adequate thought is highlighted by the relevant authorities’ failure to address them.
The people of Loutulim and Borim rally support from all over Goa, vowing to protect their way of life and calling for unity against perceived injustices and corporate influence encroaching on their homeland.
They have declared their commitment to protecting their communities from the dangers of unbridled industrialization and issued a warning against any attempts to compromise their rights and means of subsistence.
Environment Minister Aleixio Sequeira had assured the villagers that the access road would be built on stilts.
