PANAJI: Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) president Amit Patkar on Wednesday accused the BJP of hypocrisy, claiming that the Centre’s belated acceptance of an 18% cap on Goods and Services Tax (GST) vindicated Rahul Gandhi’s stand from 2016.
“Rahul Gandhi was absolutely right in 2016 when he demanded an 18% GST cap. The BJP mocked him and dismissed his vision. For nine years, the people of India suffered under the flawed GST regime. Now, after damaging the economy, the BJP has quietly accepted the same proposal it once opposed,” Patkar charged.
He added that the ruling party’s reversal was not a reform, but “an admission of guilt.” “Rahul Gandhi’s foresight was correct all along. Every household, trader, and entrepreneur has paid the price of BJP’s arrogance,” Patkar said.
The GPCC president stressed that the Congress has consistently stood for a fair and people-centric GST regime. “Better sense has finally prevailed, but the damage is already done. The nation will not forget how BJP played politics with the economy and livelihoods,” he said, while reaffirming Congress’ commitment to policies that “ease the burden on the common man and ensure the economy works for all.”
