Ratlam: On Tuesday night, an ammonia gas leak occurred at Porwal Ice Factory in Jaora, Madhya Pradesh’s Ratlam district, around 10:30 pm. The leak caused panic among locals and prompted immediate action from authorities. Police, fire brigade, and administrative officials swiftly responded to the situation. They controlled the leak by spraying water and evacuated factory workers to ensure their safety. Some individuals affected by the gas were provided with medical treatment on-site. The prompt response prevented the incident from escalating further.
Ammonia gas leaks pose significant health risks, including respiratory distress and eye irritation. There have been several incidents in India highlighting the dangers associated with such leaks. For instance, in September 2024, a gas leak at an ice factory in Jalandhar resulted in one fatality and left several others unconscious. Similarly, in April 2022, an ammonia leak in Ahmedabad’s Narol area led to the evacuation of nearly 500 people.
These incidents underscore the importance of stringent safety protocols and regular maintenance in facilities handling hazardous substances like ammonia. Ensuring the safety of workers and nearby residents should be a top priority to prevent such emergencies.
