MORMUGAO: Mormugao MLA and Goa Sewerage and Infrastructure Development Corporation of Goa Limited (SIDCGL) chairman Sankalp Amonkar on Thursday morning launched sewer works at Headland Sada in the presence of councillor Shraddha Amonkar and local residents.
Speaking at the launch, Amonkar said this was the first project he was inaugurating in his own constituency as SIDCGL chairman. “Sewage management is one of Goa’s biggest challenges, and this is my first step towards resolving the issue in Mormugao. We have launched sewerage works worth ₹3 crore that will be executed at 10 different locations simultaneously. The contractor has been directed to complete the works within four months,” he said.
Amonkar further informed that surveys and inspections had already been conducted in Jetty, Baina and other areas, with additional works expected to begin in the next three months. “The main sewage pipelines from Sada to Desterro and finally to the Baina sewage plant are 35 to 40 years old and undersized, leading to frequent choking and overflow during rains. We have now proposed a major project to replace the entire line, estimated to cost ₹80 crore. This work will be completed before the upcoming elections to provide major relief to residents,” he added.
He also revealed that the SIDCGL plans to upgrade the Baina sewage treatment plant and seven sewage pumping stations in the constituency.
Appealing to residents to cooperate in maintaining an effective sewage network, Amonkar urged every household to take a sewage connection. “Even if 90 percent of people take connections, the remaining 10 percent who don’t will cause sewage to flow into drains and water bodies. We must achieve 100 percent sewage connection coverage. For those unable to pay the connection charges, the corporation is ready to offer assistance,” he said.
Amonkar also warned that action would be taken against illegal sewage pipelines discharging into the sea. “We have identified several points where sewage overflows during rains, and I will ensure such illegalities are tackled,” he asserted.
