New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Amul and the Indian Farmers Fertiliser Cooperative Limited after both organisations secured the top positions in the latest global rankings of cooperatives. The achievement marks a significant milestone for India’s cooperative ecosystem, which has seen rapid expansion and growing international recognition.
The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation, the organisation behind the Amul brand, has been placed first worldwide, while IFFCO has earned the second spot. The rankings were released in the World Cooperative Monitor 2025 during an international conference held in Doha. The report highlights the scale, economic contribution and impact of cooperatives across the globe, placing India firmly at the forefront of the sector.
In a message shared on social media, the Prime Minister described the accomplishment as a proud moment for the country. He said the cooperative sector continues to empower citizens and strengthen communities, and noted that ongoing government reforms aim to support its expansion in the coming years.
The Ministry of Cooperation also welcomed the announcement, calling it a significant endorsement of India’s cooperative framework. Officials said the global recognition reflects the results of the national vision to drive prosperity through cooperative-led development. They added that the sector has grown more resilient and more organised through recent institutional support and policy measures.
Senior leaders echoed the sentiment, underscoring the contribution of farmers and women who form the backbone of the two leading organisations. They highlighted that the recognition mirrors years of collective effort and the widespread social impact of cooperatives in rural and semi-urban areas. The model has been credited with boosting incomes, improving access to essential services and creating opportunities for self-reliance.
With two Indian entities now placed at the top of the global cooperative rankings, the country’s cooperative movement has received a major international boost. The achievement is expected to add momentum to ongoing initiatives aimed at modernising and expanding the sector’s footprint across the economy.
