New Delhi: In a significant move to bolster India’s commitment to wildlife conservation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently inaugurated Vantara, a pioneering wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre in Gujarat’s Jamnagar. This groundbreaking initiative, spearheaded by Anant Ambani, marks a new standard in animal welfare and conservation efforts. Vantara has already earned national recognition with the prestigious ‘Prani Mitra’ Award, solidifying its role in global conservation endeavors.
Vantara is strategically situated within the Reliance Jamnagar refinery complex, spanning an impressive 3,000 acres. This sanctuary is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating, and conserving abused, injured, and endangered animals. Unlike traditional zoos, Vantara focuses solely on rehabilitation and conservation, providing a natural and nurturing environment for its inhabitants.
The centre is home to over 2,000 animals from 43 species, including rare and endangered ones like Asiatic Lions and Snow Leopards. Vantara boasts advanced veterinary services, featuring MRI and CT scans, along with specialized departments for various medical needs such as wildlife anesthesia, cardiology, and nephrology. This comprehensive approach ensures that animals receive world-class care, enhancing their chances of survival and eventual release back into their natural habitats.
Vantara’s contributions to animal welfare have been acknowledged with the ‘Prani Mitra’ National Award, India’s highest honor in the corporate category. This recognition underscores Vantara’s commitment to setting new benchmarks in wildlife conservation and rehabilitation.
Founded by Anant Ambani and supported by Reliance Industries and Reliance Foundation, Vantara reflects a strong commitment to giving back to society. Anant Ambani’s vision is deeply influenced by his family’s passion for wildlife conservation, with his parents, Mukesh and Nita Ambani, playing a significant role in instilling these values.
Beyond its core mission, Vantara empowers local communities by providing sustainable livelihoods and training in humane animal care practices. The centre aims to become the world’s most advanced wildlife institute, focusing on conserving and breeding critically endangered species for eventual release back into their habitats. This ambitious goal positions Vantara as a leader in global conservation efforts.
