SURLA: In a violent incident, a 58-year-old ferry boat sailor was grievously injured at Surla Ferry Terminal when an assailant struck him on the head with a koita.
The sailor, Ramakant Phadte of Volvoi, Ponda, was attempting to question the individual for verbally abusing the ferry staff.
Other ferry staff who tried to intervene were threatened with the weapon as the attackers fled on a reddish TVS Jupiter scooter with a pillion rider.
Phadte was immediately rushed to Goa Medical College, Bambolim, where he is currently undergoing treatment.
Police investigations, aided by intelligence inputs, identified the main accused as 40-year-old Rupesh Naik of Dhakul Maina, Sanquelim. Naik was reportedly hiding in a dense forest near Podocem.
A team led by PI Vijay Rane of Bicholim Police Station, including PSI Shridhar Kamat, PSI Viraj Dhauskar, HC Nilesh Fogueri, and PCs Vishal Parab, Dayesh Khandeparkar, and Sandip Pirankar, conducted an extensive search operation overnight and through the day on October 3, successfully apprehending Naik within 24 hours.
The pillion rider, 28-year-old Aniket Navelkar of Fanaswadi, Navelim, has also been arrested.
The scooter used in the attack has been recovered, while the weapon remains untraced.
The entire operation was carried out under the supervision of PI Bicholim and SDPO Bicholim, with overall oversight by SP North Goa. Investigation into the incident is ongoing.
