New Delhi: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has reiterated that the idea of being Hindu is rooted in cultural and civilisational affinity rather than religious practice. Speaking in Guwahati during an interaction with intellectuals, scholars and professionals as part of the organisation’s centenary events, he said that anyone who respects India’s heritage, follows its cultural ethos and takes pride in its ancestors can be considered Hindu, irrespective of their faith.
Bhagwat emphasised that the term should not be viewed as a religious boundary but as an inclusive identity shaped by thousands of years of shared cultural evolution. He noted that individuals from any community, including Muslims and Christians, fall within this broad definition if they honour the nation and its traditions. He described this identity as capable of embracing diverse customs without demanding changes in personal worship or beliefs.
He added that the concepts of Bharat and Hindu are intertwined, asserting that India does not require any formal declaration to be recognised as a Hindu nation because its civilisational character already reflects that essence.
Bhagwat spoke extensively about the RSS’s areas of focus under the Panch Parivartan framework, which includes social harmony, family awareness, civic discipline, self-reliance and environmental protection. He highlighted the importance of strengthening family structures, urging households to preserve stories of their ancestors and encourage cultural pride among younger generations.
He also noted the national relevance of figures such as Lachit Borphukan and Srimanta Shankardeva, describing the Northeast as a strong example of India’s unity in diversity. Reflecting on the organisation’s early years, he recalled the participation of RSS members in various phases of the freedom movement.
Discussing current concerns in Assam, Bhagwat pointed to issues related to demographic shifts and illegal infiltration. He called for vigilance, a balanced population policy and steps to prevent conversions that he believes contribute to social division. He also urged responsible public conduct, particularly on social media, emphasising the need to counter misinformation and maintain unity.
Bhagwat concluded by appealing to citizens across communities to work together with commitment and a shared sense of purpose for the nation’s progress.
