New Delhi: A political controversy has intensified after objectionable slogans targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi were raised during a Congress rally in Jaipur, prompting strong condemnation from the Bharatiya Janata Party. Senior BJP leaders have demanded a public apology from the Congress leadership, insisting that the matter be addressed openly on the floor of Parliament.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju criticised the slogans and described them as deeply regrettable and contrary to democratic values. He said the Prime Minister is globally recognised as the leader of the world’s largest democracy and that such language against a sitting Prime Minister was unacceptable. Rijiju stressed that denial or clarification was not enough and that an apology was essential to acknowledge the seriousness of the incident.
He called upon the Congress president and leaders of the opposition in both Houses of Parliament to apologise publicly to the people of the country. According to him, such a step would demonstrate accountability and respect for democratic institutions. Rijiju also underlined that political rivalry should never cross into personal threats or suggestions of violence, stating that disagreements must remain within the bounds of democratic discourse.
BJP national president JP Nadda echoed similar views in the Rajya Sabha, strongly condemning the slogans and saying they reflected the political culture and mindset of the Congress. He described the remarks as condemnable and said they crossed the limits of acceptable political conduct. Nadda urged senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi to apologise to the nation for what transpired at the rally.
The controversy stems from a Congress protest held in Jaipur, where a group led by a local women’s Congress leader raised slogans that triggered widespread criticism. The Congress leader later defended her remarks, claiming they reflected public anger over alleged vote irregularities. However, BJP leaders accused the party of repeatedly resorting to offensive and threatening language against the Prime Minister.
The issue has also drawn reactions from Congress allies, with leaders from the Samajwadi Party and the Nationalist Congress Party distancing themselves from the slogans. They emphasised that while political differences are natural, restraint is necessary when speaking about individuals holding constitutional positions.
With the parliamentary session underway, the BJP has maintained that the Congress leadership now has an opportunity to address the controversy formally and reaffirm its commitment to democratic norms and respectful political dialogue.
