COLVALE: Just weeks after an attempt to smuggle drugs into Colvale Central Jail was foiled, prison authorities on Wednesday caught an apprentice allegedly trying to sneak in tobacco products. The incident took place in the afternoon during a security check at the prison gate, where guards found three packets of tobacco hidden on the apprentice, who was assigned to the jail’s CCTV control booth.
Prison officials questioned the apprentice before filing a complaint with Colvale police and handing over the seized tobacco. The latest incident comes after a June 14 case where suspects tried to deliver cannabis into the high-security facility by throwing packets over the walls using a rope and tree. Police arrested three people and detained a minor in connection with that smuggling attempt.
Meanwhile, Jail Warden Narayan Naik has been suspended after an internal inquiry found that inmates had organised two liquor parties inside the jail’s cowshed on May 22 and June 15. The jail administration issued the suspension order as part of efforts to tighten security and address lapses within the facility.
