CANACONA: In a major boost to South Goa’s power infrastructure, the long-awaited underground HV/MV cable network connecting the 220/33KV Cuncolim substation to the 33/11KV Canacona substation has received final approval for energization from the State Electrical Inspectorate.
The approval, issued via communiqué dated July 10, 2025, paves the way for the commissioning of the 33KV underground cable network. This marks the formal conversion of the existing 33KV double circuit overhead line—long plagued by disruptions due to forest cover and harsh terrain—into a modern underground system.
The existing overhead network, particularly in the Padi and Karmalghat sections, frequently suffered breakdowns, leading to power interruptions in the entire Canacona taluka.
Canacona Assistant Engineer confirmed the development, stating, “We’ve received approval for testing and commissioning. Testing will now be undertaken in stages, and the network will be put into operation thereafter.”
The underground cable, once fully operational, is expected to provide stable and uninterrupted power supply to the region, significantly improving service reliability.
Terming the development as a “major leap” for the constituency’s infrastructure, Canacona MLA and Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly, Ramesh Tawadkar, said, “This energization of the underground HV/MV equipment network will bring complete relief to the power situation in Canacona. It ensures a stable, uninterrupted supply of electricity to all Canconkars.”
The project, years in the making, is seen as a vital upgrade to Goa’s power grid resilience, especially in ecologically sensitive and hard-to-access regions.
