PANAJI: Margao witnessed an engrossing finale to the 44th Commonwealth Developers Nanda Lolayekar Trophy as Arlem Cricket Club defeated Margao Cricket Club by 26 runs at Nirakar Ground, Dapot. The prestigious tournament was organised by Mashem Cricket Club and concluded with a match that highlighted resilience, teamwork and competitive cricket.
After winning the toss, Margao Cricket Club opted to bowl first and made early inroads into the Arlem batting line-up. Arlem were under severe pressure at 81 for 6, with the prospect of a below-par total looming large. However, a remarkable fightback transformed the innings and laid the foundation for victory.
Rahul Mehta played a defining role with a commanding 60 off 45 balls, anchoring the recovery. He stitched together a crucial 80-run seventh-wicket partnership with Vikas Singh, who scored a fluent 47 from 40 deliveries. Mehta then added further momentum through a 55-run eighth-wicket stand with Parth Sahani, whose quick 26 off 19 balls proved vital. Valuable contributions from Aryan Narvekar, who made 28 off 29 balls, helped Arlem post a competitive 216 before being bowled out in 33.4 overs.
Margao’s bowlers put in a disciplined effort, led by Deep Kasvankar with figures of 3 for 32. Kaushal Hattangadi supported him well with 2 for 30, while Mohit Redkar picked up a wicket for 28 runs.
Chasing 217, Margao Cricket Club showed intent but were restricted to 190 in 32.4 overs. Sanath Nevagi led the charge with an aggressive 52 off 31 balls, while Ayush Verlekar, Sagar Solanki and Mohit Redkar made useful contributions. Despite the resistance, Margao struggled to maintain momentum in the latter stages.
Arlem’s bowlers kept things tight under pressure. Vikas Singh capped a fine all-round performance with 3 for 40 to earn the Man of the Match award. Rahul Mehta and Saurin Thakur chipped in with two wickets each, ensuring control as the chase faltered.
The prize distribution ceremony was attended by senior cricket administrators and local dignitaries. In a notable announcement, a cash award of ₹25,000 was declared in recognition of a veteran umpire’s long service, while assurances were given to support grassroots cricket development in the Canacona region.
Individual honours saw Deep Kasvankar named Man of the Series, Prathamesh Gawas as Best Batsman, and Yash Prabhugaonkar as Best Bowler of the tournament.
